Góc đường Lý Tự Trọng và đường Nam Kỳ Khởi Nghĩa có một tòa nhà mang lối kiến trúc phương Tây, đó là Trung tâm Lưu trữ Quốc gia khu vực 2. Hơn 60 năm trước, khu đất này là nhà tù của thực dân Pháp có tên Khám Lớn Sài Gòn (Maison Centrale de Saigon).
Khám Lớn Sài Gòn được xây dựng trên khu đất của chợ Cây Đa Còm và xung quanh có 4 con đường là Lagran Diere (đường Lý Tự Trọng); Mac Mahon (đường Nam Kỳ Khởi Nghĩa); đường Espagne (đường Lê Thánh Tôn) và đường Filippini (đường Nguyễn Trung Trực). Từ Khám Lớn Sài Gòn đi sang Tòa án Sài Gòn không đầy trăm mét và dưới thời Pháp, hai nơi này cùng với Dinh Thống đốc Nam Kỳ tạo thành một “tam giác quỷ”.
Vào ngày 8/3/1953, sau khi Khám Chí Hòa đã xây dựng hoàn chỉnh thì Bảo Đại cho phá Khám Lớn Sài Gòn và xây Trường đại học Văn khoa.
Khám Lớn Sài Gòn xây từ năm 1886 và sau hơn 4 năm thì xong. Khởi đầu, khám dài hơn 30 mét và rộng 15 mét, có lối đi hẹp ở giữa. Hai bên là hai gian nhà giam, có hai bệ xi măng được tráng một thứ nhựa giống như nhựa đường màu đen, trên cùng trổ một cửa sổ nhỏ, nhỏ đến mức không đủ cho ánh sáng mặt trời lọt vào.
Vào những năm đầu thập niên 30, thực dân Pháp cho xây thêm nhiều buồng giam và phân chia thành nhiều khu vực để giam cầm nhiều loại tù nhân khác nhau. Khám Lớn Sài Gòn là nhà giam lớn nhất Việt nam thời bấy giờ. Trong khám có khu biệt giam tù chính trị, có nơi giam người bị kết án tử hình, gọi là “xà lim án chém”; có phòng để máy chém. Máy chém của Khám Lớn Sài Gòn được đưa từ Pháp sang. Máy chém cao 4,5 mét, có lưỡi dao vát cạnh nặng 50kg. Rạng sáng ngày 21/11/1931, thực dân Pháp đã dùng máy chém này xử tử Lý Tự Trọng.

Quế không biết và cũng không biết sở TT-VH nằm ở đâu nữa . Bót Catina thì nghe tiếng từ lâu rùi .Quế biết trong sở thú dưới cái đồng hồ mặt trời hình như là nơi bác Nguyễn Đức Thuận bị giam dưới đấy ( lâu quá rùi nên không biết có chính xác không ).
@ Quế: Nhìn từ nhà thờ Đức bà ra hướng Đồng Khởi thì bót Catina ở phía bên trái, khu nhà đầu tiên trên đường Đồng Khởi, xéo xéo với khu nhà của Bảo Việt mới xây sai giấy phép nhưng được tha ( có 1 Trỗi k6 là phó của Bảo Việt, ko biết có tham gia vụ này ko?).
Còn chỗ ông NĐT ở Sở thú là P42 được xây sau này (hình như từ thời Diệm) và ổng là 1 số những tù nhân đầu tiên.

Saigon 200 năm k nhìu "dấu xưa oai hùng" như Thăng long 1000 năm nhưng có vô số "di tích cách mạng":

- Theo tôi nhớ thì Nguyễn Đức Thuận bị bắt ở Sở Thú, đầu tiên bị Giam và xét hỏi tại "Phủ Đặc ủy Trung ương Tình báo VNCH" nay là số 3 Tôn Đức Thắng - đây là nơi khét tiếng tàn ác và hay thủ tiêu tù nhân, chỉ có "Cộng sản cộm cán mới đủ tiêu chuẩn" vô đây.
Sau khi bác NĐThuận ra tù Côn Đảo thì về K5 (quảng bá) dưỡng bệnh và viết "Bất Khuất", tôi thường đến chơi và được bác NĐThuận dạy cho cách "chọn và nuôi chim Họa mi".
